Stacey Dean Rambold was sentenced to 30 days in prison. The 49 year old teacher admitted to repeatedly raping his 14 year old student, who fell into depression and took her own life shortly thereafter. This is the most egregious miscarriage of justice in recent memory. I honestly cannot believe this just happened.
Even though I used to be a Criminal Justice student, I’ve never had much faith in the so called Criminal Justice system. Victim blaming in rape cases reflects and perpetuates the rape culture of the US. The sentencing judge said the student “seemed older than her chronological age” and was “as much in control of the situation” as the teacher. Lies of course.
This was not only rape, but repeated rape. This was not only repeated rape, but led to the death of a young girl. This was not ok.
The sentence, or lack thereof, carries unfortunate connotations. I had hoped we were making progress with equality. Across race, sex, gender, orientation, socio-economic status, everything. This “sentence” proves that isn’t the case. Women, girls, rape victims, and victims by and large do not get taken seriously, vindication, or justice. The Rambold case is yet another example to add to the growing list.
This is ridiculous.
